Grounds and Facilities
Roaring Branch is situated on a third of a mile of bluff overlooking the Roaring Branch River. Since 1913 we have endeavored to maintain Roaring Branch as a quiet, rustic retreat, where the primary summer feature and entertainment is just being on the river. Whether sitting with your feet in its cool waters, swimming in the Possum Swimming Hole, or just exploring up and down the river, with or without fishing gear, or spending the afternoon on your cabin porch, Roaring Branch is all about the river. While the Roaring Branch has many moods, depending on the season and the weather, for the most part it is gentle stream in summer.
The enjoyment of the river is enhanced by the 36 acres of second growth, old growth White Pine forest that surrounds us. It is a pleasant thing to stroll along the Roaring Branch Road that winds gently between the 100+ year old White Pines and the lower canopy of Eastern Hemlocks. Listen for the wind in the tree tops and look for the occasional owl or hawk. Make your way up the hill to admire the summer meadow in the morning, and come back at twilight to watch the fireflies emerge, and stay to watch the stars break out over the Green and Taconic mountains that shelter this oasis in the Valley of Vermont.
In addition to activities on the river and in the woods, Roaring Branch maintains a clay surfaced tennis court, a ping pong pavilion, a small children's playground, a cornhole set up, and a hardpack badminton and basketball court. In the Polar Bear community cabin, in addition to the equipment for the paddle and other sports, there is also a selection of games and books, and a front porch with easy chairs from which to watch the gaming activity at Roaring Branch.
